Newbie confusion over too many DHCP server and firewalls by Richard Treen
My old Belkin modem/router was simple enough for me to run a nice little home LAN. Since then I've had ISP supplied hardware, the latest of which, had a minimal GUI. So I got my own separate modem and router. I'm now accessing the Internet consistently at a good speeds, so no complaints there. It's just that when I look into finer configurations I find it quite confusing. Like 2 DHCP servers,...

Network Speed by Endulini
Hi Folks, I've recently had installed some cabling to various rooms in the house and have noticed, via a couple of network switches that indicate the connection speed (i.e. 10/100/1000Mbps) that some of the new connections are not running at 1000Mbps where I would expect. The interfaces are all rated at 1000Mbps and the cabling used was Cat 6. Is this likely to be down to how the RJ45 plugs...

Ethernet and power surges (thunderstorms) by Daniel James
For ease of cabling, we have a length of Cat5e cable that runs around the *outside* of part of the house. There's a wall box at each end, one of which is connected by a patch cable to the ADSL router, the other to an ethernet switch. The cable is just a length of Cat5e run through holes in the brickwork and stapled to the wall of the house by a helpful local builder. In the recent storms...

Cameras on network - help needed. by [email protected]
I have a Xenta CA610 and a Yi home camera. I used to be able to use the Xenta with ContaCam on an i5 Win10 desktop, but it stopped working. I now cannot find either camera on the network, neither appear on the router list.. I have tried numerous programs, ipCamera viewer, BlueIris etc and various network scanning programs, a Git application to run the Yi, nothing works. I also tried using an i7...

anyone recognise the malware causing this please? by Mike Scott[_2_]
Hi, my apache web server is moaning about one local client (my son's) trying to access non-existent pages, in a pattern that looks as though W*Ws malware is present there. My son claims to have done a full avast scan with nothing showing up. and disclaims knowledge of anything unusual on his machine. His machine has also tried to access my internet modem/router; it shouldn't even be aware...

Need modem purchase advice by Mike Halmarack[_2_]
I've always used modem/router combinations, usually the ones supplied by ISPs. Now, I'm needing to have the modem in one room and the router in another. My ISP is "Utlilty Warehouse" which shows up as being TalkTalk in online speed tests. I've been looking at routers for a while and quite like the Asus RT-N66U which is a router only.

WOL not working consistently by Endulini
Hi, I've been trying to set up WOL on a Windows 8 system and am confident that it's configured ok as I can confirm that the Magic Packets are getting through and are recognised both through the internal LAN and over the Internet (using a combination of Magic Packet software and TeamViewer). The problem comes when I shut the system down or set it to sleep or hibernate. Whilst I can wake it...

Using 'n' router/modem as access point on existing network? by DaveC[_2_]
I have U-verse service via 2wire 3800HGV-B. I want to add "n" router (connected via e-net) in another location in the house. I have a SmartRG SR350N dsl modem/wireless router in my junque box. Can the SR350N perform access-point duty? I hooked up the router and it passes e-net and wireless self-test and I can connect wirelessly and login. The whole circus stops when the client can't obtain...

Poor LAN Speed by Endulini
Hi Folks, I recently installed a D-Link PCI DGE-528T 1Gb ethernet card on my rather old PC (Asus P5N-E SLI mobo) but it's only returning a max sped of 100Mbps. I've played around with various settings that looked relevant but it's made no difference and a laptop plugged in to the same line recently ran at 1Gbps; can anyone suggest what settings I need to optimise to persuade it to run...

Network Security and Hardware by Nigel[_2_]
Sault, When organisations, Governments and IT/Tech websites talk about internet security they always talk of DOS, backdoors, trojans and general cyber crime. Whilst these things are of concern the thing I find most troubling is the meta data collection by governments and commercial organisations. E.g. talk of google collecting MAC addresses through their own software titles, mobile phone...
